Is FLUTE FOR KIDS?
Yes! It’s a great opera for children. It has all the attractions of a fairy tale, plus Mozart’s sublime music. Each production of the opera is different, so some emphasize the fairy tale elements more than others. Our production is a more modern version of this fantasy opera, so you can expect to see some characters on roller skates and razor scooters.
The caveat, as always: this is a full-length opera (nearly 3 hours) sung in German. Some parts of the second act can be a little slow for younger children, so make sure they’re well rested! Third and fourth graders are usually about the right age for a first full-length opera experience. |

We show the English translations above the screen, so everybody can keep up with the story. The Magic Flute has spoken dialogue which will be performed in English. If you spend some time to prepare your children ahead of time with the story and let them hear some of the music ahead of time, they should be good to go.
Have your children exercise their imaginations and draw the characters. Or maybe they’d like to try building a set in a shoebox or telling the story in their own homemade puppet theater. They can also check out our Magic Flute crossword puzzle on our website, along with Fun Facts. After the opera, you’ll have the opportunity to continue the learning by engaging them in a discussion about how the Pittsburgh Opera production differed from their expectations.
The Carnegie Libraries of Pittsburgh have many resources for The Magic Flute at member libraries.
