Board Committees
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
The Executive Committee is comprised of Board Officers, Board Committee Chairs, and the President of the Pittsburgh Opera Association. The work of the Committee includes planning the work of the board, acting as the board’s agent in the case of emergencies that can’t wait until the entire board is convened, helping the board focus on key policy decisions, and helping to provide support for Pittsburgh Opera staff leadership.

GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE
The governance committee ensures the constant health and effectiveness of the full board and the work it performs for the organization related to the oversight of programs and operations. This committee is charged with two primary responsibilities: review of the committee structure to determine whether the best organization exists to meet current and future plans of Pittsburgh Opera as a major arts organization in the Pittsburgh region, and education and growth of the Opera’s Board of Trustees. The committee therefore surveys the Board to determine desirable areas of education and to monitor the effectiveness of committees.

DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
Committee members provide oversight of annual fundraising goals and expenses, including: • Monitoring the actual commitments received to-date against monthly projections • Assisting in the development of contingencies as needed • Helping to maintain focus on current revenue needs as well as strategies for growth In addition, members personally assist in the execution of fundraising plans in one or more of three focus areas: Individual Giving – Assist in the identification and cultivation of mid-level and major donors; as well as the acquisition of new donors through special initiatives. Institutional Giving – Help to monitor and maintain a diverse portfolio of support from corporations, foundations and government sources; as well as with the development of focused messaging and reporting related to “Return on Investment” and “Community Impact.” Events – Ensure a calendar of diverse events to provide opportunities for the acquisition and cultivation of donors. Provide and help attract direct support for Pittsburgh Opera’s two big ticket fundraising events, The Diamond Horseshoe Ball and Maecenas.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Education Committee advocates for Pittsburgh Opera community and education programs for educators, students, families, and adults. The Committee supports Pittsburgh Opera’s Education Department with identifying and utilizing resources, and assist in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and activities.

FINANCE COMMITTEE
Members of the Finance Committee shall provide oversight for the financial affairs of the corporation in regard to two areas: Investment - Members are responsible for providing oversight for all investment activity of the corporation including: relationships with investment managers, developing and monitoring adherence to investment policies, and evaluating investment manager performance. Budget - Members work closely with the Finance Director in the development of the budget and monitoring of revenue and expenses throughout the fiscal year, as well as ensuring that a professional independent audit is annually performed for the corporation.

MARKETING COMMITTEE
The Marketing Committee supports the Marketing and Public Relations departments in identifying and accessing resources for increasing paid attendance at Pittsburgh Opera. Working with the Marketing and Communications Director, the committee supports the planning, strategy, and implementation of marketing goals.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE
The Nominating Committee meets throughout the year, reviewing, interviewing, and recommending qualified and interested candidates for membership on Pittsburgh Opera’s Board of Directors. Tasks of this committee include: • Identifying Board member prospects who meet criteria established by the committee • Solicit recommendations from other Board members for potential Board members • Develop relationships with select individuals by inviting them to Opera performances and special events, and arranging meetings with key Board members and staff. • Present individuals for Board membership to the Board of Trustees for a vote.

RESIDENT ARTIST COMMITTEE
Committee members support the training of the Resident Artists by identifying ways to satisfy the needs of the program, promote the artists and their events in the community, and help identify and cultivate individual and corporate supporters for the program.

STRATEGIC PLANNING
Appointment to the Strategic Planning Committee is made by the Executive Committee in conjunction with the General Director, and should represent every facet of the organization including finance, development, programs and administration. The committee helps to articulate the organization’s long-term and short-term goals; and helps evaluate current and required resources for the development of the strategic plan for achieving those goals. The committee is also responsible for monitoring the progress of activities related to the strategic plan.
