The mission of Pittsburgh Opera, Inc. is to culturally enrich Pittsburgh
and the tri-state area and to draw national and international attention
to the region. This commitment is comprised of four goals: creating
opera productions which meet and preserve the highest standards of artistic
excellence; conveying the operatic arts in ways that make the art form
intellectually and financially accessible to a diverse audience; providing
educational opportunities to develop young American singers into tomorrow's
artists; and ensuring the future of the Company through responsible
fiscal management today.
Pittsburgh Opera provides the citizens of southwestern Pennsylvania
and the field of opera at large with the following programs and services:
Mainstage Season: Pittsburgh Opera presents five
productions, in a variety of musical and dramatic styles, drawn
from the complete operatic repertoire. The company's home is in
the Benedum Center in downtown Pittsburgh, but as the season expands,
the Byham Theatre will also serve as one of the company's venues.
Pittsburgh Opera Center: Through the Pittsburgh Opera
Center, the company provides pre-professional training and career
development services to ten emerging artists each year. Movement
classes, vocal coaching, career management counseling and master
classes with operatic legends create a supportive and nurturing
environment where singers can experiment, learn and grow as artists.
Education and Outreach Programs: Pittsburgh Opera
provides curriculum-based professional development opportunities
for educators, presents performances and other programs to expose
students in grades 3-12 and college to opera, and has created an
adult education program to enrich the experience of opera-goers.
