Soprano Monica Yunus is a recent graduate of The Juilliard School where she
earned her Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance and is currently
pursuing her Master’s degree. This season includes two debuts: Gretel
in Hansel and Gretel with Nashville Opera and Oscar with Virginia
Opera in Un Ballo in Maschera. In December
2000, Ms. Yunus shared the stage with Richard
Leech and AprileMillo
opening The Palm Beach Opera’s season as Oscar in Un Ballo
in Maschera. She made her professional
debut with that company as Countess Olga in Fedora in 1999. She
has been a young artist with The Berkshire Opera Company where she covered
the role of Zerlina in Don Giovanni. Ms. Yunus’
other roles include Susanna in Le Nozzedi Figaro, Pamina
and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte,
Constance Fletcher inThe Mother of Us All,
Rose in Kurt Weill’sStreet Scene,
Sister Constance in The Dialogues of the Carmelites and recently,
Mrs. Hayes in Floyd’s Susannah.
Last May, Ms. Yunus
added the role of Nanetta to her repertoire
singing in Falstaff with Amato Opera. Chamber works performed
include Delage’sFour Hindu Poems in concert in Alice Tully
Hall, and Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate
at St. Anselm’s Church in New York.
Ms. Yunus has
appeared in recital at New York’s
Cooper-HewittMuseum,
Steinway Hall and Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital
Hall. Recent engagements include a recital in Granada,
Spain’s Manuel
De Falla Hall with her majesty Queen Sophia in attendance. Ms.
Yunus has recorded and performed the role
of Laurie in the world premiere of Copland’s The Tender Land Suite,
which she can be heard on the KOCH International label.
Ms. Yunus
has been an award winner in numerous competitions, including The Florida
Grand Opera Competition, The Palm Beach Opera Competition and The Rosa
Ponselle International Competition. Ms. Yunus
was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh
and was raised in New Jersey.
