American conductor and pianist Michael Borowitz is currently Director of Musical Studies with Pittsburgh Opera Center, and Head of Music Staff of Des Moines Metro Opera. This season he led performances of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale and Argento’s Postcard from Morocco with Pittsburgh Opera Center, Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi with Des Moines Metro Opera, a workshop/premiere of Act I of Friedman’s Teddy with Encompass New Opera Theatre, and conducting the Pensacola Opera Gala. Future engagements include Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito with Pittsburgh Opera Center, and a world premiere of a new opera for Opera Southwest’s 2002-03 season.

As a recitalist Mr. Borowitz has been heard throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, and in 2000 performed a series of concerts in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia. His collaboration with Australian soprano Virginijia Bruozis will feature a 2003 CD release of love songs.

Mr. Borowitz has served on the faculties of The Cleveland Institute of Music, Kent State University, The University of Akron, and The University of Memphis. He has also been guest conductor and assistant conductor with The Metropolitan Opera, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Opera, Opera Southwest, Cleveland Opera, and Lyric Opera Cleveland.

His commitment to the commissioning and performing of new works is evident in the numerous world premieres he has led, such as Blumenfeld’s Breakfast Waltzes and Wright’s The Fifth String with Des Moines Metro Opera, and Stringer’s Coyote’s Music with Opera Southwest.
