This opera may just change your life. It's a moving, powerful work, based on the story of 16 Carmelite nuns who defended their faith and were executed during the political uproar of the Reign of Terror in France. It is also the story of Blanche, a young novice who finds her faith on the way to the guillotine. Poulenc's distinctly French style gives this opera searing emotional impact. With Elizabeth Bishop (The Grapes of Wrath, 2008) as Mother Marie, Sheila Nadler as Mme de Croissy, Sean Panikkar as the Chevalier (The Grapes of Wrath, 2008), James Maddalena as the Marquis (Cosi fan tutte, 2006) and the newly-discovered Amanda Majeski as Blanche. Jean-Luc Tingaud conducts; Eric Einhorn (Don Pasquale, 2009; Carmen, 2010) directs. 2010-11 Season Sponsor: PNC Production Sponsor: The National Endowment for the Arts Media Sponsor: WORD-FM 101.5 |
