November Song Shop Concert with Violins of Hope

Saturday, November 04, 2023 to Saturday, November 04, 2023
12:00 PM

Location: Bitz Opera Factory

Join us at the Bitz Opera Factory on November 4th at 12:00 PM for a special FREE concert honoring Jewish composers put on the list of "Entartete Musik" (Degenerate Music) during Nazi era Germany.

Many of these composers left Nazi Germany to pursue lives and careers in other countries, primarily in the United States. Others suffered a tragic fate in concentration camps. This concert will feature the works of persecuted composers Kurt Weill, Erich Korngold, Alexander von Zemlinsky, Viktor Ullmann, Ruth Schoenthal and others as sung by our Resident Artist singers. Each piece will be framed by a short narration about each composer, giving historical context to their work.

Concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra, Charles Stegeman will also perform a work by Ernest Bloch on a Violin that belongs to the touring exhibition of Violins of Hope.

We are honored and humbled to partner with Violins of Hope Greater Pittsburgh and hope you join us for this thoughtful and moving program.

Violins of Hope Greater Pittsburgh is a landmark community project centered on the valuable lessons of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Over the course of two months, through educational and cultural programs, this unique project will use lessons of the Holocaust to demonstrate humanity’s amazing ability to rebound from even the darkest depravity. The centerpiece of this project will be an exhibit of stringed instruments that were played by Jewish prisoners in the concentration camps during the Holocaust.

Some of these instruments will be on display for the November Song Shop concert. Trained docents will facilitate an understanding of music's role in prisoners' lives, whether as a mechanism for survival, mental escape, or even resistance. Each instrument merits a story of hope and survival. Through this partnership, we are tuning out prejudice and building lasting bridges.
