Bring opera into your classroom – or bring your class to Pittsburgh Opera!

Opera Trunks

Suggested for grades PreK-12, Opera Trunks introduce opera in the classroom. Opera Trunks are large, colorful steamer trunks on wheels filled with books, CDs, videos, costumes, props, photographs, and lesson activities for your students. The Opera Trunk school package includes transportation of the Opera Trunk (25" square by 44" high), a half-day workshop for educators, one month trunk residency, and an interactive presentation in your school by Pittsburgh Opera teaching artists.

  • Carmen Opera Trunk features the Roma culture and Bizet’s music.
  • Madama Butterfly Opera Trunk features the Japanese culture and Puccini’s music.
  • Opera Improv Trunk features well-loved operas and engages students in creating an “Opera Improv” on the spot.

Please note: Educators who have previously booked trunks are exempt from the workshop. New participants must attend an orientation workshop before arranging booking dates.

Opera Opportunity

This program allows students in grades 7-12 and their teachers from eligible schools to purchase reduced-price tickets to Benedum Center performances. Pittsburgh Opera may also provide transportation for schools that request assistance in this area (availability limited). Funding for this program is provided by generous benefactors of Pittsburgh Opera.

Please note: Opera Opportunity tickets require attendance by at least one teacher per school at the corresponding Workshop for Educators.
