Bring opera into your classroom – or bring your class virtually to Pittsburgh Opera!

Opera Trunks

Three trunks. One is decorated with a tree and Asian art, another is decorated with a red curtain like in a theater, and the last one is decorated with a matador and a bull.

Pittsburgh Opera's Opera Trunks

Suggested for grades PreK-12, Opera Trunks introduce opera in the classroom. Opera Trunks are large, colorful steamer trunks on wheels filled with books, CDs, videos, costumes, props, photographs, and lesson activities for your students. The Opera Trunk school package includes transportation of the Opera Trunk (25" square by 44" high), a half-day workshop for educators, one month trunk residency, and an interactive presentation in your school or via Zoom by Pittsburgh Opera teaching artists.

  • The Carmen Opera Trunk features the Roma culture and Bizet’s music.
  • The Madama Butterfly Opera Trunk features the Japanese culture and Puccini’s music.
  • The Opera Improv Trunk features well-loved operas and engages students in creating an “Opera Improv” on the spot.

Please note: Educators who have previously booked trunks are exempt from the workshop. New participants must attend a virtual orientation workshop before arranging booking dates.

If shipping an Opera Trunk to your school is not currently possible, Pittsburgh Opera can offer many materials from Opera Trunks in digital formats for use with students from Pre-K through High School, including lesson ideas, opera reference materials, classroom activities, and production photos. In addition, an interactive, synchronous presentation by opera teaching artists—an Opera Improv—can be scheduled via Zoom to share with students at home or at school.

Fee: $200
